Thomas Hope was born in England and moved to Bridgeport, Connectjcut in the 1860s. After serving in the Civil War with the 17th Connecticut Volunteers he moved to Philadelphia and studied art in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In the 1880’s he returned to the Bridgeport area. It is at this time that he painted this still life. The banjo, a wonderful piece of Americana, as subject matter is somewhat rare in trompe-l'oiel image.
