Fine 19th Century Sculpture

Emmanuel Villanis
French (1858 -1914)

"Sirens of the Sea"
Pewter alloy (?)
24 inches high by 23 in diameter

With a great aptitude for naturalistic form, Emmanuel Villanis is one of the best known and most instantly recognizable art-nouveau sculptors. He is most readily thought of for his busts of beautiful exotic women. This piece is unusually large for the artist and shows two nude sirens amongst the waves. In the water itself there are low relief images of other bathers. The theme of mermaids and sirens on sculptural objects such as tankards and vases is somewhat common in 19th century decorative arts.
