Gérôme is consider the premier French academic artist of the second half of the 19th century. He generally chose orientalist, or middle eastern subject matter and often did historically themed works. While he is best known for his painting he did a number of sculptures which are well regarded. This piece is titled "Plaudtie Cives" which translates from Latin as "Clap Citizens". Obviously the gladiator is demanding recognition for his victory.
